Programs & Events

The Virden Area Chamber of Commerce is proud to support the youth of our community in their goals of higher education with an annual $500.00 scholarship.

The 2017 Scholarship winner was announced at the May Honors Banquet at the school.

High School seniors are encouraged to apply for the scholarship with a written essay. All essays are then submitted to a panel of judges from VACC members to read.  The applicant's name remains anonymous until a winner is chosen.  The VACC President presents the winner with a certificate at the annual Awards night presented by North Mac High in early May.  The winner is invited to attend the next VACC meeting to receive his or her check.

Congratulations to our 2017 recipient, Kierstyn Alexander

City Wide Yard Sales

Each year the VACC sponsors a City Wide Garage Sale.  Typically, it is held on the Saturday before Father's Day in June.  Residents register in advance for the Virden City Wide Garage Sale and then the Chamber picks up the cost of printing large maps-saving the seller from the cost of running a newspaper ad.  The front of the map marks every sale with a number, and on the back is a short listing of the items for sale at the corresponding numbered location. The maps are available for shoppers to pick up at Chamber member businesses around the square a day or two prior to the event.

On any given year, you'll be able to shop for treasures at 30 or more different Garage Sales!  Most of the sales begin on Friday evening from 6-8 PM and then reopen on Saturday morning at 8 AM and continue until 2 PM.  The Goodwill Truck comes to town and parks in front of the First Baptist Church beginning at 1 PM for those who would like to drop off leftover sale items for donation.  Grace Place Clothing distribution center accepts donations of clothing, bedding, and towels.

Country Christmas

Virden Country Christmas arrives on the square each December–typically on the first Friday and Saturday.

Everything kicks off Friday starting at 5 pm.  The area favorite LIGHTED CHRISTMAS PARADE rolls through at 7:30 pm.  Area businesses, organizations, churches, and individuals decorate floats, vehicles, pets, and even themselves as they create a Christmas wonderland of twinkling lights all set against the activity and charm of the Virden Square.

Lots going on before and after the 7:30 pm Parade on Friday:

The fun doesn’t end there - the fun continues on Saturday!

It doesn’t end there!  Treat yourself to a great adventure of stepping into our great Chamber businesses. Start marking off that Christmas list with unique gifts purchased at any number of specialty retail shops. From jewels to flowers and furniture to books, Virden merchants have got you covered!  From homemade to hardware–you can stop fighting the big city crowds and shop local instead!  Stop for lunch at one of Virden’s restaurants–from fast food to sit down, you’re sure to find something that suits your mood!  Watch for special surprises as from year to year you may see nostalgic push cart vendors, share in a special story time at a local bookstore, listen to strolling carolers, or even experience a live nativity scene.

Virden Country Christmas, sponsored by the Virden Area Chamber of Commerce – a great way to kick off your holiday season – see you there!
